Introduction: A New Era of Pinball

Futurebox V1 is the first AR pinball machine, blending traditional physical gameplay with cutting-edge augmented reality. At first glance, it may look like a regular pinball machine, but underneath lies a world of digital innovation. Players experience the classic flippers, ball, and scoring, but the AR technology transforms the playfield into an interactive, 3D experience.

What makes Futurebox V1 unique is its combination of physical and digital elements. Compared to traditional machines, it offers immersive gameplay, multiple difficulty modes, and endless interactive possibilities that keep players engaged and entertained.

The Origin: From College Project to Funded Prototype

The journey of Futurebox V1 began as a college project, driven by the passion and creativity of Arthur, Kevin, and another early team member. The concept was ambitious: bring traditional pinball into the augmented reality space.

Later, Arbaz Attaulla Khan and Mahmoud Samy joined Arthur, forming the core team that would bring the idea to life. They rebranded the project, refined the design, and successfully secured the EXIST Business Start-up Grant (EXIST-Gründerstipendium), awarded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action of Germany (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, BMWK) in late 2023.

The team drew inspiration from a love of innovation, a fascination with space themes, and the desire to create something that combined classic gameplay with modern technology. By mid-2024, the first prototype was completed.

The Development Journey

Building Futurebox V1 was both thrilling and challenging. The team tested the machine at over ten major events, including IdeenExpo in Hannover, Tincon Berlin, and Gamescom in Köln. Audiences loved it. More than 2,000 people played, rating it 4.8 out of 5, praising the immersive AR effects, interactive gameplay, and the fun of battling enemy ships projected on the board.

Despite the excitement, the team learned important lessons. The machine was large, expensive, and logistically difficult to move. These limitations highlighted the need to innovate further and inspired the development of Futurebox V2, a smaller, portable, and fully VR-integrated version of the pinball machine.

Features and Gameplay

Futurebox V1 is a marriage of traditional pinball mechanics and augmented reality:

  • The ball and flippers are displayed on a digital screen, while the physical playfield interacts with AR overlays.
  • Players face enemy ships and interactive challenges, creating a dynamic, story-driven experience.
  • Scoring, music, and AR effects all enhance immersion, making the game feel alive and responsive.
  • The physical setup is large, requiring careful placement, which added to its challenge and presence at events.

Players consistently praised the machine for its exciting gameplay and futuristic design, cementing its reputation as a revolutionary pinball experience.

Public Showcase and Reception

Futurebox V1 was displayed at some of Germany’s most prominent gaming and tech events, including Gamescom, Tincon, IdeenExpo, and Nacht der Technik powered by TH Köln.

The reception was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees of all ages were drawn to the machine, eager to test the AR-enhanced playfield. While some noted the size and cost as a potential barrier, the feedback provided invaluable insights for the team’s next step: making pinball more accessible and portable.

Learnings and Insights

Futurebox V1 taught the team crucial lessons:

  • Size and logistics matter- the machine was difficult to transport and set up.
  • Affordability is key- while players loved it, the high cost limited adoption.
  • Technology integration must enhance, not complicate, the gameplay experience.

These insights directly influenced the development of Futurebox V2, which is designed to be portable, 90% more affordable, and fully VR-enabled while retaining a physical playfield.

Legacy and Impact

Futurebox V1 played a pivotal role in establishing Futurebox Systems as a forward-thinking innovator in interactive gaming. It brought the company into the spotlight, introduced audiences to a new form of pinball, and laid the foundation for the next generation of board games.

While V1 was just the beginning, it proved that traditional gameplay can be reimagined through technology. The lessons learned, the excitement generated, and the innovation achieved continue to drive the company forward as it prepares to release Futurebox V2 in early 2027.
